Philosopher Jeremy Bentham's late 18th century prison concept the Panopticon enabled a disciplinary power through permanent visibility; as prisioners did not know when they were being watched they must assume all their behaviour was being observed. Today's communication technologies have a similar potential to alter user behaviour, a virtual Panopticon.
